Old Soul Single Barrel (The Bottle Shop Pick) Bourbon Review

A good bourbon that's right on the edge of great.

Nose

Caramel and toasted marshmallow are the first things I notice. The high rye portion of the mash bill stands out as well. A hint of tobacco and oak come through at the tail end.

Palate

This is a pour that spreads very quickly across your palate, activating different things along the way. It opens with a burst of vanilla sweetness, then a healthy kick of oak quickly follows. As it spreads, warm, fresh yeast rolls come to mind. I'm also getting some doses of Hot Tamales, the red sugary candy version. There is a bit of a dry mouthfeel that I commonly find in ryes and high-rye bourbons that seems to come and go. Giving it a bit of extra time between tastes seems to prevent that effect and what you get is a rich, flavorful, spicy pour.

Finish

This is a medium finish, with more Hot Tamales and rye on the backend.

Overall

This is an interesting bourbon. I get deep, sugary spice with a thick mouthfeel, but then also rye and a dry effect towards the end. The overall experience is enjoyable and different from most of my other daily sippers. There's no age statement here, which usually means it's around 4-5 years, but it certainly drinks older than that. Even the appearance of it seems older than it likely is, with a deep amber hue. This is a good bourbon that feels like it's on the edge of being great. It certainly surpassed my expectations. At an affordable price, this is an easy buy for me.
