Eagle Rare 10 year Bourbon Review

A solid bourbon that everyone can enjoy

Type: "Handmade" Bourbon

Distillery: Buffalo Trace

Proof: 90 proof

Age: 10 years

Retail: $30

Oak and vanilla are the first things I notice. There's a citrus undertone going on as well. It's not overly strong, but there's a spicy tobacco element that picks up from time to time. Overall, I'd call this a fairly classic bourbon nose with nothing unusual or super unique going on.

Honey and more vanilla lead the palate. I also find a little rye and leather. A nice dose of oak is present throughout the sip. The feel is a little thin and dry, but that's not uncommon at 90 proof. It's well rounded with the sweetness on the front and the spice on the back end. Much like the nose, it's good but not one that would stand out in the crowd.

This is a medium finish without a ton of kick. The dry feel of the palate continues through the finish and that characteristic is what lingers.

This is a very solid bourbon with a fairly classic flavor profile. It's sweet and smooth, but with enough spice to keep it honest. At $30, I can see why this is constantly on lists for "best under $40" or "top bourbons for beginners". It is easy enough to approach that anybody can drink it, but there's enough character that seasoned bourbon drinkers won't turn their nose up at it. Factoring in the price, this is one that everybody should have on their bar at home. Mix it or drink it straight, it may not be your favorite bourbon, but it won't disappoint you.

3.75 - 4.00: Great stuff. I'll buy backups if not too expensive.

3.25 - 3.50: Good stuff. Try to keep one on the bar, but don't spend too much.

2.75 - 3.00: Not bad. I don't regret the purchase but may not buy another.

2.25 - 2.50: Sub-par. I regret the purchase. Reserved for mixed drinks.

1.75 - 2.00: Bad. I'll struggle to finish the bottle. May not want it in cocktails.

0.00 - 1.50: Drain-pour. Something seems wrong with it. Get it away from me.
